The Challenge: Remote Production of Visual Radio

The Olympics present unique challenges for broadcasters, especially when it comes to remote production. NPO Radio 1, based in Hilversum, Netherlands, needed to produce a live visual radio broadcast from France, where their team was covering the Olympic events. The goal was to ensure that Dutch listeners could experience the Olympics in a visually engaging format, even though the production team was not in the same location as the studio.

The task was daunting. Producing visual radio remotely requires a robust, reliable, and low-latency solution to transmit high-quality video and audio feeds back to the home studio. With the Olympics’ fast-paced nature, any delays or technical hiccups could result in a loss of real-time coverage, potentially disappointing millions of listeners.

Enter YourSide Broadcast Assistance and Intinor Direct Router

YourSide Broadcast Assistance, known for its expertise in providing innovative broadcast solutions, stepped up to the challenge to gether With RedBee Media and EMG BlueLabel. They partnered with NPO Radio 1 to design and implement a remote visual radio solution using the Intinor Direct Router. This technology was key to overcoming the challenges of remote production, ensuring that the broadcast was seamless, high-quality, and synchronized.

The Intinor Direct Router is a state-of-the-art broadcast router that allows for efficient and reliable transmission of video and audio over the internet. It supports multiple video feeds, ensuring that the visual aspect of the radio broadcast was as dynamic and engaging as possible. Additionally, the Direct Router’s robust error correction capabilities meant that any potential issues with internet connectivity could be mitigated, maintaining the quality and continuity of the broadcast.

The Implementation: Seamless Integration Across Borders

The solution YourSide and partners provided involved setting up the Intinor Direct Router in France, where the NPO Radio 1 team was stationed in the TeamNL Fan House. The router was configured to send multiple video feeds from the on-site cameras, along with audio commentary, directly to the studio in Hilversum. This allowed the production team in the Netherlands to switch between feeds, overlay graphics, and produce a visually compelling radio broadcast as if they were on-site.

The entire system was designed to be user-friendly, allowing the production team to manage the broadcast with minimal technical intervention. This was crucial, as the fast pace of the Olympics demanded a solution that was not only reliable but also easy to operate under pressure.

Prior to shipping the equipment to France Redbee and YourSide configured the Kit localy in the netherlands and tested the workings. After confirming this the preconfigured kit left for France.
